Dan Mclaughlin

Dan consented to be interviewed during the Army/Navy game on December 5, which must have been quite a sacrifice for a former navy man.  Dan served in the navy for four years during World War II and in the Coast Guard for eighteen years after that.  First becoming involved in the Knights of Columbus in 1950 in Kewaunee, he visited a number of Councils in various places during his time in the service.  Though inactive for a while, Dan got going again when Council 10243 was forming in early 1990 and volunteered to be the new Council's first Financial Secretary.

Serving as Financial Secretary has enabled Dan to be very active in the Council, and he spends much of his time keeping track of billings and of fraternal service hours.  Not much of a "convention-goer", Dan prefers involvement in the local Council, expressing great satisfaction with seeing the Council nearly triple in membership over the last three years.  He feels the biggest part of the job is "keeping members in" by handling much of the practical details of membership such as dues.  Although his term will expire in April, he doesn't plan on letting his involvement in the Council lessen.  "The best part is camaraderie--Christian men working together".

Dan is a native of Youngstown, Ohio and met his wife Elizabeth in Kewaunee.  They have two children, and, as Dan proudly states, one grandchild.  Though retired, he still works as a bailiff occasionally.  They have been in this area since 1966 and are married over 42 years.

Dan says he'll miss his direct involvement in seeing the Council grow, but he has this advice for "newer" Knights: "Get active; don't sit back.  The more active you are, the better you'll feel.  And the better Council you'll have.  70 active men could really move Green Bay".  Dan is certainly a great example of how rewarding it can be.
