Jim Hershman

One of the most attractive things about Jim’s recent retirement is that he feels it will allow him to spend some more time in one of his favorite pastimes--fishing.  He enjoys stream trout fishing, but he says he needs to go lake fishing once in a while because his wife doesn’t like to get out of the boat.  He also admits that she seems to do better than he does, and he’s hoping that retirement will give him the chance to catch up.

Jim retired this past May 5 from Tosca LTD in Green Bay, a company which deals in the reconditioning of cheese containers and beer kegs.  They have also recently gotten involved in plastic recycling.  In his 37 years there, Jim did all sorts of things and spent as good deal of time as a foreman.  It was sometime around the time that he was planning his retirement that Jim thought he’d like to get involved in some sort of charitable, volunteer organization.  Fortunately, Aaron Naze had been working on getting him involved in the Knights of Columbus, and he was successful.  It was about two years ago that Jim made his First Degree in Council 10243 and since then he has managed to make most of the meetings and has been a part of the Tootsie Roll drive and the recent booyah sale.  He has memories of the Knights from his grade school years, and recalls the images of the Fourth Degree Honor Guard at various functions.  He was somewhat aware of the activities of the Knights in general and was interested in coming aboard when Aaron talked to him.  He appreciates the direction of the Knights, living out their mission especially through all the charitable work they do.  He also sees the Knights as a “classy organization,” and really likes the way they do things

Jim and his wife, Alice, have been members of St. Bernard Parish for about ten years now.  Prior to that they were at Ss. Peter & Paul.  While there, Jim was quite active, helping the parish re-vitalize the Parish Picnic and serving as Athletic Director.  In that latter capacity, he and a number of other men of the parish managed to form a basketball league for girls.  While Jim’s daughters were in grade school, they noticed that there were leagues for boys and for eighth grade girls, but none for younger girls.  After a good deal of time spent “pounding the pavement” and working the telephones, he and several other men managed to get a league formed.  He regards that as one of his proudest accomplishments.

Now that he’s retired, fishing is one of his goals, but he’d also like to do some traveling--’see the USA.’  He intends to escape Wisconsin winters, but also plans on seeing where his gifts and talents might fit into the activities of the Knights of Columbus.  Jim and Alice have been married for 38 years this month and have two daughters, one residing in Milwaukee and another in Columbus, Ohio.
