Ken Sevcik
As is the case with many other members of the Council, Ken remembers a relative, an uncle in his case, who was a member of the Fourth Degree. Aside from some of the functions of the Honor Guard he knew a little about the organization, especially at he witnessed Council 10243 in action in Green Bay. He knew of the charitable efforts and the good job they seemed to be doing in the community, and had seen the booyah sales and activities of that sort. His wife and Gerry Piontek's wife Janet had worked together several times at functions at church. So, after Gerry had urged him to get involved in the Knights for several years, he was eventually ready to accept. A relatively new member of the Council, he's still trying to get the hang of things. He has noted several activities recently but had not gotten a call, but hopes to take part in things like brat fries and Tootsie Roll drives in the future.Ken is from Kewaunee originally and in high school worked part time at a bottling plant. He went to active duty with the National Guard and then started looking at Green Bay for a future job market, noting that there didn't seem to be a lot of new industry coming to Kewaunee. Within a week of coming to Green Bay he found a job at 'P & G'. He started in the shipping department, being responsible for loading boxes and trucks as well as some special projects and occasional training of other employees. Though his responsibilities on the floor were consistent with Union rules he found himself taking on some management responsibilities. For about the last ten years there was also the opportunity to travel occasionally. One of the things he liked about the job was that he never seemed to get tied down to one shift, and was therefore free on occasion to be more involved in the growth of his children and their school activities. About five years ago, after over thirty years of service, he retired.
Retirement might not be the right word, especially since he has taken an interest in woodworking and has a shop set up in his basement. His brother had been involved in the hobby and after a shopping trip Ken came home with about $2000 worth of tools. When he was younger hobbies included camping, but the interest in the outdoors these days are often satisfied by helping out his mother-in-law in Kewaunee with yard work and keeping up the house. Then there's always the chance to travel. He has a sister-in-law in Washington state and Ken and his wife visit her occasionally. They have also been to other places such as England, Ireland and Italy. One of the Italy trips was with one of his sisters who is a Franciscan Sister from Manitowoc. Retirement also includes baby-sitting for three grandchildren once a week. Ken and his wife Mary have been married for 35 years now and have two children. They are soon planning a trip that will include stops in Washington state, California and Colorado. He might also try his hand at recruiting--he has a son-in-law who has expressed some interest in the Knights. We are happy to have Ken and Mary as a part of the Council family and we look forward to their becoming a part of all that the Council does for the Church.
