Weldon Kiernan
Weldon’s has not been too familiar a face at Council meetings, which is a break from the past when he served as an Officer at the time the Council was chartered. Unfortunately he was injured at work about two years ago, and the injuries as well as the stress and strain have had him in the hospital about a dozen times over the last two years. He recalls knowing nothing at all about the Knights of Columbus up until about the time the new Council 10243 was being formed. At the time, “I was looking for some excitement” and adds “The Knights were a lot of fun.” He can’t remember who asked him to consider joining, but he does remember that it took place while he was playing golf at Woodside. Weldon became a Charter Member of Council 10243 and served as the first Treasurer of the new Council, an office he held for about two years. He found his time in the Knights to be rewarding, since he could identify with their interest in doing things for the Church and for the betterment of the community. Like so many others, he put in a lot of time at food stands, Tootsie Roll Drives and some of the other activities many members of the Council are involved in.
A native of Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan (“I’m a Yooper, not a Canuck”), Weldon also lived in Lena before ‘migrating’ to Green Bay in 1970. He worked as a butcher for about twenty years and then spent some eight years working in upholstery. It was around this time that he became associated with the Knights, and some of the men who have been with the Council for several years will remember some items of furniture which Weldon brought to meetings to raffle off. His boss, Tom Hussin of Hussin Upholstery in Howard contributed the materials and Weldon did the work. In this way he helped our struggling young Council to make ends meet. Eventually he took a job at Perret Homes which manufactures mobile homes. It was on the job in December of 1995 when he got caught between two trucks and suffered his injuries.
Weldon and his wife, Edith, have been married for thirty six years now and have four children, all living in the area. Members of St. Bernard Parish for many years now, Weldon has sung in two parish choirs for eleven years and occasionally does some cantoring as well. His only real source of relaxation is playing golf, and his time on the course has been severely limited because of illness. He also helps out at Paul’s Pantry doing some light work. Despite his unavoidable absence, Weldon feels close to the Council and felt especially honored to have been chosen Knight of the Month back in June of 1991.
