Grand
Knight's Column
As I accept the gavel of leadership
from Randy, I also want to take a moment to thank him. He has served as an
officer of our Council in one capacity or another for the past six years. He
has been a good leader, mentor and friend for me. Over the last two years we
have worked closely together to develop and grow the Council. I am happy to say
that Randy is planning on staying active in our Council as our Membership
Director for the upcoming term. Again I thank him for all of his hard work and
leadership, especially over the past two years when he served as our Grand
Knight.
As I reflect on our
Council, its members and our accomplishments, a sense if pride wells up inside
me. Our Council is rather young 9established 1-16-90), but our performance is
anything but ordinary. We have proven more than once that we are head and
shoulders above the rest when it comes to supporting the State Council by
selling raffle tickets. We also typically out-perform other Councils in raising
money for the MR campaign. And, of course, our own Council's fund-raisers prove
to be quite successful. However, my sense of pride does not come from the
amount of money that we have raised, but rather how much money we have given
away and the good that it has done. By myself I could never have accomplished
such things. However, by working together as a team we do accomplish a lot. In
fact, that is what someone once said the word TEAM stands for--"Together
Everyone Achieves More." I believe this to be true. As we start our new
fraternal year I look forward to working with all of you to meet our challenges
in the areas of membership, fundraising and charity. By working at keeping our Council
active and involved, it keeps our membership strong and provided the
opportunity for many of our men to put their faith into action. As our faith
journey and our life journey continue, so too does our journey in the Knights.
Individually we are simple men with common goals. Together we are a team of
Knights dedicated to the service of our Lord, working together so that everyone
can achieve more.

Next
Meeting
The July meeting of Council 10243
will be held on our usual third Monday of the month, July 17 at 7:30 PM with
the rosary preceding at 7:15. The Council thanks you for making our gatherings
a priority and sharing in the task of shaping the future direction of the
fraternity
August
Meeting: One Week Earlier
Due to a critical conflict (Packer
game) the August meeting of Council 10243 has been moved ahead one week from
the usual third Monday (August 21) to the second Monday, August 14 (And yes,
the next day is a 'holy day'.) Mark your calendars and plan on attending the
August meeting one week early.
Chaplain's
Column
A couple of weeks ago on Memorial
Day I went down to DePere to watch the parade. I remember Janet Rebman
mentioning that she and Carol Naze were going to be going down as well, but I
didn't pay it much mind. After all, the parade route was fairly long and I
really didn't expect to see them in the crowd anyway. In the couple of days
after the parade I found out that Janet and Carol were near the same spot where
I was, as was Marilyn Frosch. None of us made a great effort to find one
another; in fact none of us really knew that the others were standing around so
close. We were all within a half a block of one another and didn't even know
it. That got me to thinking about how much we can miss if we're not paying
attention. We like to take pride in the fact that the Knights of Columbus are
an active organization, always seeming to help out somewhere. There are lots of
activities going on and those activities take a lot of men and families to keep
them running. But, I have often been impressed not just by the great things we
do but by the caliber of people who make these things happen. In the 'down
time' when there are no customers for Tootsie Rolls or brats, or in the times
when we're just sort of sitting at the edge of a table peeling a carrot, these
are the times when we can discover yet another treasure--the treasure of our
membership. All too often we allow many things to go on around us and we don't
take a lot of interest in what's happening. We can miss a lot that way; we can
miss out on the opportunity to really get to know the men and families who are
united with us in the Knights of Columbus family, and we can get to know their
stories. We can share some of the joys and some of the sorrows of their lives
and we can take advantage of the opportunity to tell a little bit of our story
as well. How often do we take the time to sit down and just talk to another
person? How often to we allow ourselves the time to just learn a little bit
about the people who are a part of our fraternity? Even 'small talk' can speak
volumes about things that matter in the lives of the people around us. I'm not
suggesting that we sit around and start revealing deep and dark secrets, but
rather that we don't miss out on the opportunity to get to know our brother
Knights and their families just a little better. That takes a little bit of
time and effort. As it was at the parade in DePere, I didn't know there were
friends nearby because I didn’t look hard enough. Are we looking hard enough at
the family of Knights which surrounds us? Do we know anything at all about
their stories? Take advantage of meetings and activities and give the time
necessary to get to know just a little bit about another person who took part.
It's an awfully long walk from the meeting across the parking lot to the car if
no one talks to you or even acknowledges your presence. Let's make sure that
never happens in our fraternity.
Father Al Lis, O.F.M.

Administrative
Assistant
The Board of Directors of the Badger
Columbian Corp., the administrative arm of the State Council of the Knights of
Columbus, has hired William Brosius for the position of Administrative
Assistant at the State Office in Madison. Mr. Brosius is quite knowledgeable
about computers and resides in Cross Plains. Our best wishes go with him as he
assumes this important position within the State Council.
Transfer
Howard Erickson, a First Degree brother Knight who recently became a
part of Council 10243, has transferred to Council #617 in Green Bay. We wish
him well.
Prayer
Prayer for those in the
Medical Profession
God of life,
source of health and of grace,
through your inspiration the minds of your people
have unlocked many mysteries
and you have enabled your people
to make great advances in science and medicine
for the good of your people.
Turn your face toward all those
who dedicate their lives
to alleviating the suffering of others.
Look with kindness upon
physicians, nurses, technicians,
researchers and all caregivers.
May they see their chosen profession
as a share in your healing power.
May your people continue to follow
the guidance of the Holy Spirit
and may continued discoveries
be tempered with right judgment
so that we may arrive at a world
where disease and suffering
are but memories of the past.
Guide your people in all that they do
so that your will may always be accomplished
among those who serve you.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Corrections
Despite whatever 'Roy C.' may have
had to say on the Council's web site, no slight of workers was intended by this
NEWSLETTER. We work off the lists that are supplied to us and what was
sent along was what was published. Unfortunately, the listing of helpers at the
Festival Food stand (June 3-4) was not quite complete. Add to the list the
assistance of John Schmitz. Also the Tootsie Roll Honor Roll (May 5-7)
should also contain the folllowing--Gene Schmitz, John Schmitz, Aaron Naze
and Terry Misfeldt.
Diocesan
Meeting
The 'Diocesan Swing' meeting for the
Green Bay Diocese is scheduled for Saturday, September 16 at St. Joseph Church
in Green Bay. Officers and others interested: Mark your calendars.
Cub Food Stands
Several brother Knights and family
members took time off of their celebration of Fathers Day on Sunday, June 18 to
help out at the first Food Stand at Cub Foods. Though the holiday contributed
to the traffic being somewhat slow, we applaud those who took part in the
project: Aaron Naze (Coordinator), Leon Janowski, Gene Schmitz,
Clayton Langenberg, John Schmitz, Grant Turner, Al Greene, Ron Rentmeester,
Arnie Rank, Stan Waslowski, Dan Barrington, Don Barrett, Rick Tlachac, Lynessa
Tlachac and Jason Vandermause. A total of $289.07 was raised.
Cub Food Stand Part
II was staffed by our Council family on June 25. Thanks again to coordinator Aaron
Naze and those who helped that day: Leon Janowski, Curt
Gilson, Tom Gauthier, Grant Turner, Brad Gauger, Mike Delvaux and his
daughter, Ian Forbes, Dave and Betsy Whitton and Randy
Barrett along with his daughter and a friend. A total of
$279.89 was realized by the time things closed up around 5:00 PM.
Council
Officer Installation, July 10
Council Officers are to be installed
at a cookout at Randy Barrett's residence on Monday, July 10. Randy said
at the June meeting that all who would like to attend are welcome. A report on
the Installation will be included in the next NEWSLETTER.
State
Officer Installation
The Installation of State Officers,
which we presumed would be held on Sunday, August 20, has been moved ahead one
week to Sunday, August 13. The celebration will include a Mass and dinner, to
be held in Middleton, hometown of State Deputy Carl Templin. Members of
Council 10243 are encouraged to consider attending, since the next time this
takes place we assume it will be for our own Richard Rebman, and the
Council has certain responsibilities to assume. Further information will be
included in the next NEWSLETTER, but anyone thinking about attending
should contact Richard (468-8472).

History
Supplement
Past State Deputy Erv Jankowiak
has announced that he and all the members of the 'Ten Year Supplement'
Committee have been re-appointed by State Deputy Carl Templin. The
committee is charged with producing the Ten-Year Supplement to the History of
the State Council, covering the years 1992-2002. The Committee includes
Chaplain Father Al Lis, PGK Randy Barrett and PGK (6568) Jason
Vandermause of Council 10243 as well as Diocesan Representatives Bill
Cross (Madison), Jim Hopp (Milwaukee), Morris Marsolek
(Superior) and Leonard Huschka (LaCrosse).
Supreme
Convention
In just a couple of weeks a few
thousand Knights and friends will descend upon Boston for the 118th Supreme
Convention. This Convention may produce some interesting changes at the Supreme
level, and it sounds as if it will be an exciting gathering. Also planned are
social events and tours of the historic city. Among those planning to attend
from Wisconsin are our ten designated delegates and Richard & Janet Rebman
and Father Al Lis from Council 10243. The Convention is in session
August 1-3.
We
Want You: Summer Blast
St. Bernard's "Summer
Blast" is fast approaching and the Knights have volunteered to run grill.
This is a task we have done at previous Bernard's picnics and we know from
experience that it takes many hands to make the work go smoothly. Also by
having more people helping, it makes the time go quickly and the work turns
into fun.
This is going to be
a wonderful family event and in fact, we are encouraging entire families to
volunteer for a time slot. Wives and older children are certainly welcome to
help make our part of the picnic a success for St. Bernard's. Or better yet,
you and your family invite a brother Knight and his family to volunteer for the
same time slot so you can socialize and work at the same time. The recurring
theme here is to volunteer to help out at the Knights' Grill. Some of you may
have already volunteered to help out at another activity for the picnic and
that's understandable. If you are committed to the maximum and cannot work a
shift for us, that's okay. If you are working the picnic but feel that you can
do more, please consider spending two hours of your picnic at the Knights'
Grill. The hours of operation for Saturday are from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM and
Sunday from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM. If there is a certain time frame that you
would like to volunteer for, just call either one of our chairpeople for this
project: Roger Shaha (469-1608) of Larry Ziarnik (468-1979).
The Spotlight is on Bob Agard
As was the case
with so many other men who came to the Knights of Columbus, it was a desire to
be involved in community service and "to give something back" that
brought Bob to us. He knew that the Knights were a good organization and
involved with the Church, and after running into neighbor Jim Barnett a couple of
times on morning walks, he accepted an invitation to become a part of the
fraternity. Jim's approach must have had some magic to it because a couple of
months later Father Al called Bob about Second and Third Degree. Thinking it
was just another telemarketer with a sales pitch, Bob hung up.
Originally from
Janesville, Bob came to the Green Bay area on a job related move about four
years ago. His occupation is a mouthful--Orthotist Prosthetist. His work is to
make artificial limbs and braces and in general to be about the whole world of
prosthetics. After earning a degree in Biology, Bob decided to take a year off
and learn to make teeth and worked for a while as a dental technician. The
educational process for his field is quite unique and it led him from the
University of Minnesota through a related program in a technical school.
Currently he is working through a one-year residence program and has been at
Monroe Prosthetic Associates in Green Bay for about six months seeking the
necessary certifications in prosthetics. Always having been rather inventive
and interested in working with his hands, he recalls working in a restaurant a
few years ago and, as a means of helping put himself through school, sold
'carnivorous terrariums' --jars with plants such as flytraps which he'd
collected from the woods. They sold quite well among the tourists.
Though he hasn't
been a member of the Knights too long, he was approached about serving as an
Officer and was elected to the position of Inside Guard. In addition to being a
part of several Council meetings he has found the time to take part in such
activities as the Tootsie Roll Drive, the Festival Food Stand and was a part of
the 'calling committee' to find workers for the food stand. Though a First
Degree member at the moment he hopes to advance through Third Degree at the
next opportunity in the Fall.
He also places a
high priority on spending time with his family--his wife of five years, Susan,
and son Samuel who is just over a year old. Besides all that, he enjoys some of
the outdoor life--camping, hunting and fishing. As far as the indoor life goes,
he admits to a desire to be more computer literate. He has enjoyed his time as
a part of the Council 10243 family, noting the blend of ages, occupations and
backgrounds all coming together in the Council. We are grateful for his
willingness to enrich the Council by joining with us and we likewise appreciate
his willingness to serve as an Officer.
