Knight's Column
It’s amazing how fast two years
can go by. It seems like only a few months ago I was preparing to take over as
Grand Knight and here I am, writing my swan song. The really great part is that
I can look back on those two years and they are filled with many pleasant
memories. I’m not saying that being Grand Knight, or head of any organization
for that matter, is easy. Any position that has defined responsibilities and
expectations is bound to bring a little stress and inconvenience into your life.
But, the tradeoff is well worth it. The last two years have been very fulfilling
and rewarding for me, as has my entire tenure with the Knights of Columbus.
The
Knights of Columbus is a unique organization in that it brings many
opportunities to us, the membership, to be participants in activities that help
others and identify ourselves as Catholic gentlemen. I am always very proud of
what the Council accomplishes in the name of charity; after all, it is our
mandate as Knights. But I am equally proud of being recognized as a part of this
group of Catholic gentlemen who are making a difference. With that being said, I
can now say that having had the opportunity to lead this organization was truly
a privilege and an honor.
I’ve
tried to make a difference over these last two years and hopefully the Council
has developed and become a little stronger during my tine as Grand Knight. It is
my belief that the best way I could thank and honor those who were Grand Knights
before me was to continue their work and dreams for the Council. It is also my
belief that the most important thing I could do for our Council was to find a
good man who is both willing and capable of leading us for the next two years.
Someone capable of not only maintaining the organization but capable of making
it even better. I am very excited and pleased that DGK Rick Noe is that man. I
hope you will join in my enthusiasm and offer him the support that you gave me.
I
would like to close by thanking everyone for their support, especially that of
my officers. Without a doubt the efforts of men like Chaplain Father Al Lis, DGK
Rick Noe and FS Jim Barnett were invaluable to me these last two years.
(They’re really the ones that make the Grand Knight look good!) I am extremely
pleased that the end of my term as GK only takes away some of the
responsibility, as I look forward to working with my friends in the Council for
a very long time into the future.

Next
Meeting: Elections
Please make every effort to keep
calendars clear for the next meeting of Council 10243, scheduled for the usual
third Monday of the month, June 19. This meeting is an election meeting and will
begin at 7:30 PM with a rosary preceding at 7:15. It is very important that as
many brothers as possible attend in order to have a voice in the leadership of
the Council.

Randy Barrett has been an active
officer of our Council for the past six years. During that time he has been
instrumental helping in many capacities. In serving as our Grand Knight for the
past two years, he has been highly visible at many a K.C. function. It may have
been bell ringing, cooking brats and burgers or organizing a pancake breakfast;
he has always been there. But, his leadership and dedication to the Council goes
far beyond just attending these types of events. It is his attention to the
details and his ability to communicate and coordinate these concerns to his team
members that has made for a smooth running two years. I believe that if he added
up all of the phone calls that he has made on behalf of the Knights that even he
would be surprised at how large that number would be. Randy has always taken the
time to respond personally to a brother Knight's concern or problem. His
compassion and concern for the men that make up this organization would not let
him do otherwise. The Council's success over the past two years is largely due
to the fact that we have had a good man at the helm steering our course. But, it
is not totally because of this. In order to have a very active and effective
leader, two other things are needed. The first is an active Council that is
willing to take up the many challenges that are presented. The second is just as
important, and that is the support and understanding of the Grand Knight's
family. Becky, Aaron and Kimberly have supported and helped Randy as Grand
Knight during his term the last two years. They have helped at many KC functions
and have attended even more. It is because of their direct involvement and
commitment as a family that the 6:30 Sunday youth mass at St. Bernard has become
such a success. It is because of actions such as this that our Council chose the
Barrett family to be our "Family of the Year." We are grateful
for their years of service and look forward to working with them, side by side,
in the future.

Picnic
As promised, this year's family
picnic was a lot drier than last year, where water balloons were hardly needed.
Nearly fifty people came together to share food and fun at Preble Park on
Sunday, May 21. Thanks to the Knights and Ladies of the Council and to their
family members and guests who also took part: Ray Demerath, Father Al Lis,

Tootsie
Roll Drive
Just after a record year with the
State Charity Raffle, the Council followed up with a great showing in the
Tootsie Roll drive held May 5-7. A total of $3687.82 was collected by Council
members at Wal-Mart East, East Towne Mall and St. Bernard Parish. Wal-Mart was
the biggest money maker, as expected, and not having that site last year kept
contributions down. Having the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby at East Towne on
Saturday helped out as well. Though the turnout of brothers could have been
considerably better, the total was great, as will the good that can be done with
the proceeds. The council's share will be divided between Brown County
Association for Retarded Citizens and the programs for the mentally challenged
of the Diocese of Green Bay. Thanks to Randy Barrett and Rick Noe

6568 Honors Alumni
Council 10243 brothers John
Murphy and Jason Vandermause recently attended the Installation of
Officers at their former Council, #6568 in Madison on May 5. They both just
thought it would be nice to see some old friends but both walked away with
awards--John received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Council and Jason,
who served as Grand Knight of the Council, was awarded the prestigious Honorary
Charter Member Award. Congratulations to them both for their continuing
contribution to the fraternity.

Something
missing? Despite the careful
recording of our special dates, errors are inevitable in an organization the
size of our Council. We record and publish these dates primarily so that brother
Knights and families may celebrate with the rest of the Council family on our
special days. However, this is also an historical record of the Council and the
people who comprise it. If a special date in your life is missing or incorrect,

Congratulations to Council brother Jason
Vandermause and Mary Destiche who recently became engaged.
Congratulations also to all those members of the Council 10243 family who
graduated recently--especially to Kelly Gigot. After four years of night
classes Kelly received the Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Lakeland
College in Sheboygan. After all the effort, Kelly made sure he attended the
ceremonies on April 30. Father Robert Stegman, a brother Knight from a
Council in Kimberly, joined us at the last Council meeting (May 15) along with
Father Doug LeCaptain. Welcome back to Bob Wozniak, a
Charter member of Council 10243 who had left the Knights. Bob was recently
reinstated through the efforts of Roy C. Johnson. Mason Powers
sends greetings to the Council--Mason recently bought a house on a lake in
Mound, Minnesota. He is a member of Council 10243 who has been working in
Minneapolis for just over a year now. Gratitude is extended to Grand Knights of
local Councils who complete their time of service this year. We extend prayerful
good wishes to two we are aware of: Michael Witte, Grand Knight of
Vincent Lombardi Council 11834 in Green Bay and Tom Treml, Grand Knight
of neighboring Msgr. Basche Council 4505 in Green Bay.
Chaplain's
Column
I believe it was St. Athanasius who
called the Easter Season "The Great Sunday," a celebration intended to
be carried through the entire fifty days of the season. That sounds like a grand
idea, but somewhere about half way through one sort of gets the impression that
we might just be running out of steam. After all, the lilies are dead and in
many places so are most of the rest of the flowers that decorated the church as
we celebrated the first day of the resurrection. Easter decorations are
beginning to disappear and there is a certain sense of just being too tired to
carry on any longer. I guess it all sort of depends on how we view this time of
celebration. Surely it is getting to be a lot, but do we look at this time of
the Church as being 'life-giving' or is it just viewed as more 'work?' Something
sustains us through the time of Easter if we look upon this time as a nurturing
and fulfilling time. It doesn't mean that every day of the season must be
celebrated with excessiveness, but it does suggest that this is not just another
season of the year--it is special. Often in the flowing rhythm of our year as
Knights of Columbus we come upon these seasons--times that are busier than
others and in which more of an effort is expected. Such a time was recently when
we went through not only the ticket sales for the State Charity Raffle, but the
Tootsie Roll drive and so many of the other things that seem to come up at this
time of year. How do we look upon these things? One view would be to see them as
interfering with our personal schedule. We can resent the demands upon our time
and criticize those who encourage us to take part and "fulfill an
obligation to the Council." We tend not to appreciate being reminded that
being a part of any group or organization brings with it certain
responsibilities that are placed on the members. On the other hand, we can look
upon these responsibilities as opportunities to further this thing we call
fraternity. We can enjoy the company of one another and get to know the brothers
of the Council and their families just a little better. This approach might
enable us not to see the things that the Council is about as just 'more work to
do' but instead as an exciting opportunity to come to a deeper understanding of
brotherhood by happily taking part in something that we are doing. No one
expects that every member of the Council take part in every activity--we all
have many responsibilities and the Knights are just one among them. On the other
hand, fraternity can't be built by one man standing there peddling Tootsie
Rolls. It takes at least two because we not only draw that life-giving spirit
from one another but we create life and fraternity between us. There'll be calls
coming for Food Stands and other projects of the Council. As we begin a new
fraternal year and prepare to welcome a new administration, let it also be a
reminder to all the brothers of the Council to make a renewed commitment to seek
the new life and the joy that involvement with the Knights invariably brings.

above totals $1855.00. All but the last came from the Charity fund. In addition
the Council determined that 20% of all future fundraisers (unless otherwise
designated) would be set aside for anticipated expenses of the Council at the
time of Richard Rebman's election and installation as State Deputy in
2002.
Holy
Hour
A little late to acknowledge it, but
thanks to those who came to take part in the Holy Hour back on Wednesday, April
5. About seventy-five people were present representing the Councils in District
13, as well as a few members of the Honor Guard. Most of those participating
were from Council 10243. Chaplain Father Al Lis presided. Thanks to
District Deputy Gene Rameker for handling some of the arrangements.
Food
Stands
Council brothers who like to work at
food stands will 'have their fill' this summer. We have been given dates at
Festival Food (East) of June 3-4, July 22-23 and August 19-20 and Cub Foods for
two Sundays, June 18 & 25. Richard Rebman (468-8472) is coordinating
the Festival projects and Aaron Naze (468-1029) secured the dates for
Cub. Brothers may contact Richard or Aaron to volunteer for some time. In
addition, as noted elsewhere in this NEWSLETTER, the Knights will be
handling the Knights' Grill at the St. Bernard Summer Blast on July
29-30. Certainly there is a need for help at all of these stands, and some will
take place prior to the next Council meeting. A call tree has been activated to
fill some of the slots. Please be generous in your time when the telephone rings
asking for help.
State
Officers
Congratulations again to Richard
Rebman who was elected State Secretary at the Convention in April. Richard
will assume his duties on July 1 and will be formally installed with the rest of
the State Officers in Middleton on August 20. Some brother Knights should plan
on attending the Installation so that we may witness what responsibilities we
might have in two years when we expect Richard to be installed as State Deputy.
At the last Council meeting it was determined that 20% of all future
fundraisers, unless otherwise designated, would be set aside to handle
anticipated expenses of the Council at the time of his installation. Letters
congratulating the newly elected State Officers and thanking those who are
completing their service to the State will be available for signing by brothers
of the Council at the meeting on June 19.
Steppin'
Right 2000
Diocesan Vocation Director and
Council brother Doug LeCaptain was present at the last meeting to talk
about what's happening in his office. Currently there are nine seminarians. Doug
recently was part of a Life Directions weekend and is planning for Steppin'
Right 2000, a program directed toward 6-7-8th grade students to meet with
priests and religious brothers and sisters to promote vocations and to learn
about the vocation story of area priests and religious. Some promotional
material on Steppin' Right 2000 was passed out and the Council agreed to
contribute toward some of the costs that the Vocations Office will have to meet
as well as helping serve the snacks. Brothers interested in helping out can
contact Doug (437-7531 x8293) or GK Randy Barrett (465-9717). There is
also a Seminarians' Retreat at Chambers Island August 8-10 and Doug indicated
that space might be available if any brother Knights wished to take part and get
to know the seminarians. (It might also help put a volleyball team together.)
Doug has additional information on Vocations activities and he extends his
gratitude to the Council for its generosity.
Changes
at State Office
Some changes have taken place at the
State Office in Madison. Joe Donlin, a familiar voice on the telephone to
those who call, has moved on. As a new Administrative Assistant is sought, some
State Officers have assumed responsibility for things happening in the Office.
Our own brother Richard Rebman, currently State Treasurer, has
been spending several days a week in Madison taking care of some of the business
matters that need to be addressed.
Prayer
In June, the month of Father's
Day, it is appropriate to pray for all those who have been called to share in
the vocation of Christian Fatherhood, living and deceased.
Glorious
God and Father,
Author and Source of all life,
in your wisdom
you have made and sanctified all things.
You govern the course of all creation
so that all you have made
may fittingly proclaim your glory.
In your graciousness, you have called many men,
that they may share in the work of your Church
through their ministry as Christian fathers.
Through the example and intercession
of Adam, Abraham, David, Solomon,
Zechariah, Matthan and Joseph
and all those to whom you have given a share
in the holy and life-giving ministry of fatherhood,
bless those men whom you have chosen
for service as Christian Fathers,

Knights'
Grill at Summer Blast
The St. Bernard parish picnic is
back and this year it is back with a vengeance. After a five-year absence the
event has returned, this time as a two-day celebration scheduled for July 29-30.
The Knights were once again asked to run the Knghts' Grill as we have in the
past. This, of course, means that we will need many hands to volunteer in order
to make this a success. The hours of operation are Saturday from 11:00 AM until
10:00 PM and Sunday from 11:00 am until 4:00 PM. If there is a certain time
frame for which you'd like to volunteer, just call one of our chairmen for the
project: Roger Shaha (469-1608) or Larry Ziarnik (468-1979). This
is going to be a wonderful family event that promises to be a lot of fun, and we
are encouraging families to volunteer for a time slot. Wives and older children
are certainly welcome to help make this contribution toward the success of the
Summer Blast. Clear your calendars now so that you can take part.
Festival
Foods
The first of our summer cookouts
took place on the weekend of June 3-4 at Festival Foods in East Green Bay. The
rain on Sunday held off until closing time, and the business was pretty good.
Net profit amounted to about $720.00. Thanks to all those who helped
out--according to the sign-up sheet the following brothers were a part of this

Fourth
Degree Plans Elections
Marquette Assembly 1197 will be
holding elections at their next business meeting, scheduled for June 13. Among
the candidates on the slate for Office are three members of Council 10243--Roger
Shaha for Trustee I, Larry Ziarnik for Faithful Navigator and Father Al
Lis for Faithful Friar. Roger recently completed a two year term as Faithful
Admiral which is comparable to Immediate Past Grand Knight in a Third Degree
Council, and Larry's position of Navigator is comparable to that of Grand
Knight. The Office of Faithful Friar, like that of the Chaplain, is an appointed
position. About a quarter of the men of Council 10243 are Fourth Degree Knights
and members of Assembly 1197

March in Honor Guard
Joining a Knights of Columbus
tradition to a DePere tradition, Richard Rebman and Aaron Naze
joined other members of the Fourth Degree Honor Guard of Marquette Assembly 1197
in the DePere Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 29. A dozen Honor Guard members
in full regalia of the Honor Guard took part in the annual parade. Richard again
had the great privilege of carrying the U.S. flag, and we are proud that one of
our men had this high honor. Several Knights and family members were among the
throng lining the parade route. Thanks to Eastern District Marshal Don
Bettine for his ongoing work with the Honor Guard.
Spotlight
is on… John Murphy
John
has always enjoyed volunteer work and it was the desire to find some involvement
upon coming to Madison a few years ago that led him to the Knights of Columbus.
About three years ago as a student at UW-Madison he attended Mass and it
happened that Council 6568 was doing a recruiting drive. He was interested and
he enjoyed becoming a part of the Council and taking part in meetings and
activities. In his time with the Council he served as Community Director and
recalls taking part in too many food stands to count as well as doing bingo on
occasion at a nursing home. He also was associated with the Apostolate to the
Handicapped with Father Tom Campion, and he spent a good deal of time collecting
tickets and selling beverages at Badger games, something else the Council does
for a fund raiser. While he couldn't think of too many other activities, he
remembers that in the time he spent with the Knights he was always very busy. He
recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from Council 6568 for his
contribution to that Council.
Upon
graduating with a Degree in Electrical Engineering he followed fellow Council
6568 member Jason Vandermause to Green Bay and began working at Proctor &
Gamble about six months ago. Around that time he also transferred to Council
10243 at the urging of Jason, himself a recent transfer to our Council. In his
short time with our Council, John has taken part in various activities including
the Pancake/Porkie breakfast and a double shift at the Tootsie Roll Drive. He
has also managed to make most of the meetings of the Council. In his time in
Green Bay and at St. Bernard Parish he has also gotten involved in the Youth
Group and is trying to organize some volunteer and outreach activities for the
youth, including visiting people in nursing homes. At the moment, however, he is
still trying to get to know all the names and faces.
Originally
from Wausau, John has a brother and four sisters and gets home to visit every
couple of weeks. A few weeks ago he also served at the ordination of a
transitional deacon along with his brother. While in Wausau he also worked as an
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and has been recently wondering how he could
have handled the ambulance runs in the middle of the night and then make it to
classes in the morning. After attending UW-Marathon Center in Wausau he
transferred to UW-Madison, "a good school and a nice city" to pursue
his Engineering Degree. Since coming to Green Bay he has been working at 'P
& G' and spends his days on electrical projects and maintenance on a paper
machine. As he's still pretty new to the job he has been spending a lot of time
in training and in getting to know his responsibilities. There's also the
endless flow of paperwork that needs to be attended to. Though he keeps himself
pretty busy, in his free time he enjoys walking and has recently taking up
ballroom dancing--anything from waltz to cha-cha to polkas. He also notes that
he's looking for a partner. We're very happy that he has decided to partner up
with Council 10243 and we look forward to getting to know him better.
