Bill Brown
Bill has a dog named Sadie, which he considers to be an integral part of his family. Sadie spends about ten hours a day watching television, a luxury that someone as busy has Bill can hardly afford. The Knights of Columbus is just one of his many involvements, and he estimates that he has over thirty evening activities to be involved in every month. He also says he made about 950 calls last month on his cellular 'phone.
Yet, as is sometimes the case, people who find themselves so busy can often find the time for one more thing, if it is important to them. Bill and Roger Shaha worked together as den leaders in the Cub Scouts when Roger talked to him about being a part of the Knights of Columbus. Bill has been a part of the Knights for a little less than a year now, having just made Second and Third Degree on October 17. Asked about his most memorable activity with the KC's so far, he replies, "Third Degree. That was a lesson well-learned." Bill became involved because the organization stood for values close to him--Catholic oriented, associated with the local parish, and involved with volunteer service projects. Though he often has commitments that keep him from making Council meetings, he and his family are involved in many of the activities of the Council. He enjoys doing things for charitable causes--"Helping other people makes you feel good."
Bill is a native of Marinette and came to the area around 1976--saying the move was "job and love related." He has been going with his wife, Cheryl, since they were fifteen years old and they have been married for fifteen years now and he and Cheryl and their two children, Erica and Elliott, have been singled out as the October Family of the Month from Council 10243 for their considerable involvement as a family in the life of the Council. Bill admits to sometimes having an ulterior motive--he relates the story of the family working together at the Younkers Warehouse Sale and his wife arranging to slip into the front of the customer line as soon as the doors to the sale opened. "It was like moving from charity helper to Super-shopper," he says. Still, the involvement is important to him--he sometimes sees the family participation in events as "family day" and notes that the children enjoy helping out as well. While he really enjoys the involvement, he feels the Council needs to look seriously at discovering ways of making more money from fund raising activities.
Bill works in used car sales at Quality Plus Auto Sales and he and his family have been a part of St. Bernard Parish for about ten years now. In his "spare" time, he enjoys basketball, fishing, hunting, boating and golf.
