Curt Gilson
Like a number of men who are a part of Council 10243, Curt is retired, and like many others, he finds that there seem to be at least as many demands on his time now as there ever were before when he was still working. However, he says he never regretted the decision to retire and he makes the most of every single day that comes his way. Curt got involved with the Knights of Columbus way back in the fifties. He and several friends were persuaded by another friend to consider joining. He found himself a member of Council 617 in Green Bay. Some of the details of his early time in the fraternity are “fuzzy” right now, but he does have a pretty good recollection of the degree ceremonies which brought him through the Third Degree. He also remembers the Council meeting in an empty church until a new owner of the property obliged them to move.
Curt and his wife, Blossom, have been at St. Bernard for about four years now, after moving to the east side from St. Agnes parish. It was just about a year ago that Curt transferred to Council 10243 at the urging of Al Collins (He said he was interested in transfer but he wondered if there was room in Council 10243; naturally, Al assured him there was plenty of room), and he has taken part in several of the meetings of the Council since his transfer. Though he has never served as an officer of a Council, he does place value on the meetings and has remained an active member through his participation in them.
A native of Dykesville, Curt’s family left their farm and moved to Green Bay when he was four. After high school, he worked for a hardware store until he found that DeGroot & Allen Electric was looking for electricians. After a number of years with them, he answered an ad in the paper from the Green Bay Fire Department and spent some thirty five years in that service while doing some electrical work on the side. He retired from the Fire Department in 1979 and has been enjoying his retirement ever since. His retirement is characterized by several forms of relaxation including golf, fishing and travel. Curt and Blossom have been married for twenty years now and they have three daughters between them from their previous marriages. We are certainly happy that he found room at Council 10243 and we look forward to his continuing presence at the functions of the Council.
