Ray Demerath
Ray is a man who likes to cook and has an interest in food, and somehow that interest served as the incentive which got him involved in the Knights of Columbus in the first place. It was at one of the Council’s famous food stands that he made the decision to join the Knights--at a Copps ‘brat fry’ some time back he got to talking about the Knights with Dave Whitton. Dave invited him to join the organization, and Ray felt interested since he had a friend who was in the Knights several years ago. That friend is now deceased, and although Ray wasn’t particularly interested in the KC’s at the time, his friend’s involvement in the Knights got Ray looking in that direction. After talking with Dave, one thing led to another and eventually Ray came into the Council, advancing through the Third Degree in October of 1995. He found the Degree ceremonies particularly interesting. He was elected Inside Guard at the election meeting in June of 1996. Although he is not quite sure what the position is all about or even how he ended up on the ballot, he is looking forward to serving the Council as an Officer.
Ray works at Copp’s Food store in Green Bay (East) as a bagger and also spends a lot of time on other things that need to be done in the store. Before coming to Copp’s he worked at Piggly-Wiggly. It seems as if he has been around food forever, and that interest in food has also been lived out through some of the activities of the Council--he has participated in several of the booyah sales and food stand fund raisers, not to mention the Tootsie Roll Drive. He remembers helping out in the Tootsie Roll project for another Council a number of years ago, so being a part of the Drive with Council 10243 gave him that old, familiar feeling.
Single all his life, Ray was born and raised in Green Bay and has lived in the area for as long as he can remember. He is a member of Holy Trinity Parish in Denmark. He attended Preble High School and was a part of the Green Bay Jay Cees at one time, though he is no longer active. For relaxation he enjoys renting movies and he also dabble in taking pictures, but he doesn’t consider himself to be a photographer by any means. He also enjoys helping people out and being outdoors, and frequently cuts grass over the summer and shovels snow in the winter as well as sells Christmas trees. He looks forward to continuing his service to the Council by serving as an Officer, and he would recommend the Knights to anyone who is looking for involvement in a great organization and is interested in meeting a lot of new people.
